SUPPORT OUR WORK
Mariposa Family Learning Center offers high-quality, evidence-based childcare and educational family services for low-income families located in the poorest neighborhood of Austin known as Montopolis. Using a “2-Generation” approach, Mariposa strengthens families, some of these led by single mothers, toward greater well-being and economic stability. Mariposa serves a part of Austin categorized as a “childcare desert” and uses a subsidy-supported model. Mariposa strives to prepare children, through early childhood education and enhanced family support, to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. With this 2-Gen approach, Mariposa endeavors to help affected least-advantaged families break the generations-long poverty cycle that hinders them.

In the summer of 2021, the Mariposa Family Learning Center voted to take over the Montopolis Friendship Community Center building located right next door, known as the “Centennial Building”. We are going to use the space as offices, a teacher resource room, a family programming space, and a community hall. The building needs extreme remodeling and updating to comply with current permitting requirements.
As our first impression of the neighborhood, the exterior landscaping, yard, and playground should reflect the beauty and utility that families deserve, and the interior should be a place of comfort, safety, and play for the Mariposa community. We have carefully planned the space to help us create an environment where teachers can provide the best possible care and education for young children. We are just in need of resources for the special project.

Our Local Community Needs YOUR help
Mariposa is in southeast Austin’s Montopolis, a neighborhood historically neglected and isolated. The working-class neighborhood has long been the poorest in Austin, with about two of every five residents living in poverty, according to the U.S. Census. The median adult age is 27, placing many residents in prime childbearing years. With a median monthly household income of $3,253, the average rent is $1,381, claiming over 42% of income before addressing food, transportation, and health care. Both situational and generational poverty are prevalent. Allison Elementary School, located two blocks from Mariposa, has a student population that is 92 percent Hispanic.
WhyMariposa FLC is an evidence-based whole family learning center. This model of early education is shown to be the most effective at disrupting the cycle of generational poverty in low-income communities. When the expensive burden of childcare is lifted from families and taken on by the community, parents have greater freedom to pursue economic prosperity in the form of better education, training, or jobs to improve the lives of those in their families.

HowMariposa is committed to a subsidized tuition schedule that reduces up to 80% of the cost of child-care for families. We are a young organization and for the past couple of years we were affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic and have been supported by the generous community grants organizations. But we need the help of many individual donors who can give us one time, monthly or annual donations.
We need YOUR help. |
WhoLocated on Vargas Rd in Civitan Park in 78741, Mariposa's location is central to families that are looking for child care. Families of Montopolis, Del Valle, and other East Austin neighborhoods come together to create the school community of Mariposa. These families are often minorities, work in low-paying service industry and construction jobs, live in multi-generational homes, experience food and housing insecurity, and cannot afford the cost of high-quality early education for their young children.
