Jan Richards
VIce Chair
Hello, I am Jan Richards. I am a native Texan and have been in Austin since 1966 when my family moved back to Texas after living in Los Angeles for 12 years. In 1985, I began working for Round Rock ISD where I was a First Grade Teacher, an Elementary School Assistant Principal, and Principal at Laurel Mountain Elementary. I loved my 36 years in education and believe that helping children develop their talents and interests by connecting with the ground beneath their feet and the diversity of our world will prepare them to be caring, productive citizens.
After retiring in 2019, I was looking for a way to share my love of children and teaching while working within a school setting. I learned about Mariposa Family Learning Center through my church and was immediately drawn to the mission and vision of providing quality early childhood education to the families and children in Montopolis. I am honored to serve on the Board of Directors at Mariposa FLC. I believe that the first five years of a child’s life are crucial to their life long success. These years are filled with joy, curiosity, and excitement as children learn about the world. I am energized by young children; their smiles, their laughter, and their thoughts. I loved being involved during the initial planning phases at Mariposa FLC, and then welcoming our first children along with their families. I am excited to work alongside the families, teachers, and community members to help Mariposa FLC grow and become a vital part of the Montopolis Community.
Retirement has provided me with more time for friends, gardening, traveling, and reading. We have a large extended family that brings my husband and me much joy. We especially love doing anything with our two daughters, their husbands, and our 4 grandchildren.

Me siento honrada de servir en la Junta Directiva de Mariposa FLC. Creo que los primeros cinco años de la vida de un niño son cruciales para el éxito de su vida. Estos años están llenos de alegría, curiosidad y emoción a medida que los niños aprenden sobre el mundo. Me energizan los niños pequeños; sus sonrisas, sus risas y sus pensamientos. Our congregation has been very active in Austin City Lutherans and I was part of the team that spear-headed the formation and development of Mariposa. I love the mission of providing children opportunities to grow, develop, and flourish in a safe and healthy Early Childhood Center. I have been honored to serve as a founding Mariposa Board member and have had the privilege of being Chairperson of the Board. I look forward see to how God will be at work through Mariposa!

Veronica Marquez

Veronica Marquez has over 20 years of proven leadership success in fiscal management, board governance, performance and strategic management, operations oversight, fund development, community service administration and health care management.
Mrs. Marquez has experience in participating in Boards, she has served in small and large local boards such as: Lifeworks, Emancipet, Mexican American Cultural Center, Connecther, and Lulac district 12.
Mrs. Marquez holds a BS in Industrial Relations from Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESO) and a MS in Human Resource Management from Houston Baptist University. Her continuing education efforts include studies in neurolinguistic programming and a Project Management.
Her career started in Mexico as a Human Resource Generalist for a Major Soccer Club, followed by an extensive career as an International Ambassador for the St. Luke’s Hospital/Texas Heart Institute in Houston where she functioned as marketer of the hospital’s services in both Italy and Mexico.
Mrs. Marquez was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer/Chief Administrative Officer of Texas CASA August 2012 to January 2019. Texas CASA, a nonprofit organization with the mission to support seventy-one local CASA volunteer advocacy programs and to advocate for effective public policy for children in the child protection system.
Mrs. Marquez is a multicultural and multilingual (English, Spanish, Italian) perspective, which aided her to build international and diversity relationships for the different companies she worked for throughout her career.
Mrs. Marquez enjoys traveling, learning about different customs and cultures, hobbies include genealogy, cooking and learning new languages.

Verónica Márquez cuenta con más de 20 años de éxito comprobado en liderazgo en las áreas de gestión fiscal, gobernanza de juntas directivas, gestión del desempeño y estratégica, supervisión de operaciones, desarrollo de fondos, administración de servicios comunitarios y gestión en el sector de la salud.
La Sra. Márquez tiene experiencia participando en juntas directivas; ha formado parte de juntas locales tanto pequeñas como grandes, tales como: Lifeworks, Emancipet, el Centro Cultural México Americano, Connecther y LULAC Distrito 12.

My name is Mike Riggs. My wife and I moved to Austin in mid-2018, and shortly after arriving we began to hear about the efforts of Austin City Lutherans to establish a day care in East Austin that could serve families striving to provide high-quality care and learning for their children. Coming from a family of educators, with my wife recently retired after 35 years of teaching reading to young children in need, this new day care - Mariposa Family Learning Center - seemed like a mission we could support, with our abilities, our time, and our passion.
In 2019, I joined the Mariposa board of directors to help grow the new day care as it impacts the daily lives of the children and families it serves; in 2021, I began volunteering time to read and play with the children. In this volunteer role, I have been blessed to see the Mariposa staff and children together growing the new community that is blossoming on Vargas Road. A new thing is happening at Mariposa, and I am happy to do my part as this "butterfly" grows!

Hello! I’m honored to serve on the board at Mariposa Family Learning Center. My family and I have lived in Texas since 2012 and in the Austin area since 2016. Prior to my time in Texas, I worked in the nonprofit fundraising and community engagement space in the midwest and the southern region. I am passionate about understanding what’s going on in our community and actively helping to make it better for everyone.
In my 12-year nonprofit career, I had the privilege of working in a variety of mission areas at both the local and state level. Having experience in the arts, community development and child welfare, I try to bring a thoughtful, holistic perspective to complex community issues. I spent the last 6 years of my work in nonprofit as the head of private fundraising for Texas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) where we activated donors to support positive change in the state’s foster care system for vulnerable children and their families.
My work in child welfare was meaningful and eye opening. While over the last few years I have made a career shift into a creative field (interior design), my passion for mission-based work and investing in the well-being of children and families remains. Now, as a local business owner, I’m grateful for the flexibility and opportunity to channel that passion as a board member of Mariposa FLC!
I am also a member of Texas Women in Business- Austin, and when I’m not working or volunteering, I most enjoy spending quality time with my husband, daughter and our Dalmatian.

Pasé los últimos 6 años de mi trabajo en una organización sin fines de lucro como jefe de recaudación de fondos privados para CASA de Texas (Court Appointed Special Advocates/ Defensores Especiales Designados por el Tribunal), donde activamos a los donantes para apoyar un cambio positivo en el sistema de acogida del estado para niños vulnerables y sus familias.
Mi trabajo en materia de bienestar infantil fue significativo y revelador. Aunque he dado un giro profesional hacia un area creativo (diseño de interiores) en los últimos años, mi pasión por el trabajo basado en una misión y el invertir en el bienestar de los niños y las familias permanece. Ahora, como propietario de un negocio local, estoy agradecido por la flexibilidad y la oportunidad de canalizar esa pasión como miembro de la Junta Directiva de Mariposa FLC.
También soy miembro de Texas Women in Business-Austin, y cuando no estoy trabajando o siendo voluntaria, lo que más disfruto es pasar tiempo con mi esposo, mi hija y nuestro dálmata.

As an active member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church I have had the privilege of
experiencing the founding and growth of Mariposa Family Learning Center and am honored to now serve as a Mariposa Board member. During my time at Shepherd of the Hills, I have held many leadership roles spanning Church Council (President), Stewardship (Chair), and Personnel, and am also a trained Stephen Minister.
During my professional career, I have over 30 years of senior executive experience driving innovation while delivering critical business results in technology companies ranging from startups to the Fortune 500. As an executive, I have led engineering, marketing, and partner organizations in companies providing silicon and software solutions to customers in the cloud, data center, and high-performance computing markets. I currently serve as Senior Director for Technical Standards at Qualcomm. In this role, I represent Qualcomm in several key technology areas, focusing on RISC-V where I am a member of the Governing Board of the industry organization RISE and serve as Treasurer. I have an MBA from Northeastern University (Boston) and a BS Computer Science from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis).
