Hi, I’m Barb Dunnam, Executive Director of Mariposa Family Learning Center. I bring over 20 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, with a deep focus on early childhood, youth development, and outdoor education. Before joining the Mariposa community, I had the privilege of leading Camp Fire Central Texas, where I helped children build confidence and curiosity through hands-on experiences in nature.
Throughout my career, I’ve seen how powerful the natural world can be in nurturing growth, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. That belief continues to guide me in everything I do.
I’m thrilled to be part of the Mariposa family and look forward to continuing our mission of creating a joyful, inclusive, and supportive environment for children and families in Montopolis. If you see me around, I’d love to say hello!

Greetings, Friends! My name is Joel Delatorre, Program Director of Mariposa Family Learning Center. My adult career began right down the street at Allison Elementary School in 1976, as a Bilingual/ESL 2nd grade teacher! Since then, I have taught Kindergarten-3rd grade in Galveston ISD and coordinated after-school programs in both Galveston and Austin. My family were all educators, so I get it naturally!
I am also a diehard Texas Longhorn fan, all sports, and swam for the UT Swim Team while attending. My education was always strengthened and influenced by both of my parents, my Dad being a UT grad, teacher, and coach, and my Mom, who worked as an Administrative Assistant at UT. I have one brother who attended UT and now lives and works in Bastrop, TX.
I love sharing information with others and collaborating with them on best practices for our little ones. My philosophy is the belief that we can ALL learn from each other and provide the most inclusive and child-oriented program possible for our future generation! I look forward to working with all our Mariposa Staff and Families!

Mi carrera profesional comenzó justo aquí cerca, en Allison Elementary School, en 1976, como maestra bilingüe/de ESL de segundo grado. Desde entonces, he enseñado de Kinder a 3er grado en el distrito escolar de Galveston y he coordinado programas extracurriculares tanto en Galveston como en Austin. ¡Todos son educadores en mi familia, así que me viene naturalmente!
También soy fanática de los Texas Longhorns en todos los deportes, y nadé para el equipo de natación de UT mientras estudiaba allí. Mis estudios siempre estuvieron fortalecidos e influenciados por mis padres –mi papá, graduado de UT, maestro y entrenador, y mi mamá, quien trabajó como asistente administrativa en UT. Welcome! My name is Sayda, and I'm the Admin Assistant here at Mariposa.
Before stepping into my current role, I spent two wonderful years in the classroom, where I truly enjoyed working with the kiddos and helping them explore new activities. I still assist in the classroom whenever needed, as I love being involved in the learning process.
My family is from Honduras, and I am Bilingual in English and Spanish, which has been an important role in connecting with others and helping create a welcoming environment for our diverse community.
I’ve called Austin home for the past three years, although I was born in Dallas and raised in Waterloo, Iowa. I moved back to Dallas during my teenage years and lived there for seven years before making the move to Austin with my family.
I have two children of my own, and one of them was a student here at Mariposa. It’s been amazing seeing how much he enjoyed and learned during his time here. I’m proud to be part of this wonderful community!
When I'm not at Mariposa, my family and I enjoy being outdoors, traveling, and trying out new activities and foods.

Antes de asumir mi puesto actual, pasé dos años maravillosos en el salón, donde realmente disfruté trabajando con los niños y ayudándolos a explorar actividades nuevas. Todavía ayudo en la clase cuando es necesario, ya que me encanta participar en el proceso del aprendizaje.

I’m very excited to be a part of the Mariposa FLC. I will be the lead teacher in the orugas classroom. I have experience working with infants and toddlers. I have worked in different Daycare centers in Preschool settings in California, Houston, Mission, and Austin. This has allowed me to work with other families in helping parents try different techniques to guide their children to a more successful school year. I enjoy teaching children to discover and explore the world around them in a loving and caring environment.
I am a teacher who enjoys being around children. I’m a very patient person that likes to get down to the children’s level and view everything from a child’s point of view. I enjoy singing children's songs and reading books to children, as well as storytelling. A big plus is that I love to help children discover a little bit of what they want and who they are.
Estoy muy emocionada de ser parte de Mariposa FLC. Soy la principal maestra/cuidadora en el aula de Las Orugas. Tengo experiencia trabajando con bebés y niños pequeños. He trabajado en diferentes guarderías en entornos preescolares en California, Houston, Mission, también aquí en Austin.

Esto me ha dado la oportunidad de trabajar con diferentes familias para ayudar a los padres a probar diferentes técnicas para guiar a sus hijos a tener más éxito en el año escolar. Me gusta enseñar a los niños a descubrir y explorar su mundo a su alrededor en un ambiente amoroso y afectuoso.
Soy una maestra que disfruta estar cerca de los niños. Soy una persona muy paciente a la que le gusta agacharse a estar al mismo nivel de los niños y ver todo desde el punto de vista de un niño. Me gusta cantar canciones infantiles y leer libros a los niños, así como contar cuentos. Una gran ventaja es que me encanta ayudar a los niños a descubrir un poco de lo que disfrutan y quiénes son.

Hi, my name is Gricelda Perez. I am from Michoacán, Mexico, where I obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting. When I first came to Austin I started working in a daycare, and It was there where I discovered that I love to teach children. My passion is to transmit love and share my knowledge with the little ones. What I love the most about my job is how the children are like sponges who are ready and willing to accept everything and I am happy to leave a healthy and positive impact in their lives. I enjoy learning new activities like dance, art, and crafts - and I hope to share my creativity with the kiddos in the classroom. I am happy and excited to be part of MFLC.
