Our Local Community Needs YOUR help
Mariposa Family Learning Center is located in the Montopolis neighborhood of southeast Austin—a historically underserved area facing significant challenges. The neighborhood has a higher rate of childhood poverty than 97.3% of U.S. neighborhoods, with 61.6% of children living below the federal poverty line. Allison Elementary School, located just two blocks from Mariposa, serves a student population that is 90.1% Hispanic, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the community
Mariposa is committed to breaking down barriers to high-quality early childhood education in Montopolis. We offer a nurturing, bilingual learning environment that empowers children and families to thrive, regardless of their financial situation.
Why
Mariposa Family Learning Center is an evidence-based, learning center. Research shows that this approach to early education is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of generational poverty in low-income communities. By lifting the costly burden of childcare from families and sharing it with the community, parents gain greater freedom to pursue economic opportunities—such as further education, job training, or better employment—ultimately improving the lives of their entire family.

Montopolis is predominantly Hispanic/Latinx, with many residents working in low-wage service, construction, and manual labor jobs. Families often face barriers including limited formal education, language differences, immigration status concerns, and a lack of access to affordable, high-quality childcare.
At Mariposa, we are committed to breaking down these barriers, providing a nurturing, bilingual learning environment where children can thrive and families are supported in accessing opportunities for growth and stability.
